In my research, I examine the relationship between citizens and the state. In particular, I am interested in the self-organisation of citizens in civil society organisations and the context conditions and strategies of these organisations in democratic and authoritarian regimes. Another focus of my work is international health and social policy and the comparison of welfare states. I am particularly interested in how interventions for vulnerable populations are developed in the tension between global norms and local contexts. The geographical focus of my research is on the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
I am a member of the editorial board of the journal Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations.
