Chair of International Relations & Regional Studies
The Chair covers a broad spectrum of topics in international relations in both research and teaching. The focus is on peace and conflict research and the analysis of foreign and security policy, but also includes issues of international political economy and the role of international institutions. In this context we examine the causes and consequences of international military conflicts and internal violent conflicts, as well as the effects of globalisation, prosperity and its distribution. Our teaching and research concentrate on empirical analyses of theory-driven questions.
The Chair is home to the research project “The Ambivalence of Deterrence and Cooperation: Challenges of Security Architecture in the Baltic Sea Region" which analyses the upheavals in NATO's presence in the Baltic States and, in particular, the changing role of Germany as part of the interdisciplinary IFZO joint research project "Fragmented Transformations" (BMBF). Other current research foci include international armed conflicts, international interventions and the stability of military alliances.
