Voices from the periphery: (De-)constructing and contesting public narratives about post-industrial marginalization (VOICES)

The VOICES project (2024–2027) is a DFG/AHRC-funded research project that examines the role of the media as key agents in the public construction of post-industrial marginalisation. It explores modes of subjectification among residents of post-industrial communities in relation to dominant mass-mediated narratives through a cross-national comparative approach. The project focuses on six post-industrial towns that have experienced the rise and decline of industrial labour: Redcar, Rotherham and Middlesbrough in the North of England, and Weißwasser, Lauchhammer and Eisenhüttenstadt in East Germany.

VOICES is conducted in collaboration with University of Greifswald (Germany) and partner universities in the United Kingdom (Bournemouth University, University of Stirling) as part of the UK-German Funding Initiative in the Humanities.

Strengthening European integration through the analysis of conflict discourses: Revisiting the past, anticipating the future (RePAST)

RePAST (2018–2021) examines how European societies engage with troubled pasts in the present by analysing conflict discourses rooted in those pasts and assessing their implications for European integration. The project develops analytical frameworks and proposes strategies at both the policy and civil society levels for critically reflecting on these discourses in order to strengthen European integration.

RePAST is coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology and funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme.
