The MA degree course in Language and Communication is guided by the idea of bringing together findings from linguistics and communication studies on the common subject of language and communication in an interdisciplinary manner. In addition to basic research into language systems, over the past few decades linguistics has developed a broad approach to the study of language in its actual areas of application (text linguistics, conversational linguistics, discourse linguistics, pragmatics, research into institutional communication). Communication studies, on the other hand, has recognised that not only mass media communication is part of its genuine subject matter, but that it is also essential to consolidate the theory behind interpersonal and informal communication in its interaction with mass media communication and develop methods for its analysis.

The MA degree course in Language and Communication aims to teach the theories, methods and areas of application of German linguistics and communication studies in an interdisciplinary manner. In-depth knowledge of subject-specific theories and the interdisciplinary relevance of subject-specific methods of analysis will enable students to apply their knowledge to various areas of communication (communication in institutions, science, media systems, public communication, business, politics).
